Yamamoto Ichiyo 山本 一洋

Yamamoto Ichiyo was born in Nagasaki in 1944. He began his career in ceramics in 1969 at an Arita porcelain facility, where he developed a strong technical foundation in traditional porcelain production. In 1974, he spent a year in Taiwan studying porcelain, an experience that broadened his material and cultural perspective. Upon returning to Japan, he established his own kiln in Imari in 1975.

In the mid-1980s, Yamamoto began in-depth research into platinum glazing, a pursuit that brought him international recognition. His work received awards in Paris for three consecutive years, in 1986, 1987, and 1988. Following this success, he relocated to Takatsuki, on the border between Osaka and Kyoto, where he immersed himself in wider cultural and academic studies that would further inform his artistic direction.

In 1993, he moved to Hyogo Prefecture, entering a period during which his reputation continued to grow even as he remained geographically fluid, resisting attachment to a single place. Nearly a decade later, in 2001, he returned to Imari. Since then, his work has been exhibited widely throughout Japan and internationally, including in Valencia, Los Angeles, New York, and San Diego.
