Yamaguchi Michie 山口美智江

Yamaguchi Michie was born in Aichi Prefecture in 1964 and came to ceramics later than most, beginning her practice at the age of 35. She opened her studio in Nagoya in 2003, and within a few years her work began gaining national attention.

Her first selection for the Nitten National Art Exhibition came in 2008, followed in 2009 by acceptance into the Nihon Tōgei-ten (National Ceramic Art Exhibition), where she has since been repeatedly awarded. That same year marked a major breakthrough: she received the Shōrei-shō Prize at the Kobe Biennale and, in her first appearance at the Women’s Association of Ceramic Artists (WACA) Exhibition, was awarded the T-shi Prize.

From 2011 onward, her career advanced rapidly. She received awards at the Kikuchi Biennale, the 45th Women’s Ceramic Artists Exhibition, and the Nihon Shin Kōgei-ten (National New Crafts Exhibition), and was selected for the International Ceramics Festival Mino. In 2012, she was awarded at both the Mino Tōgei Shōrokushō Chawan Exhibition and the Mino Ceramic Art Exhibition, followed by recognition at the Hagi Taishō-ten in 2014.

Further honors include awards at the 43rd Mino Tōgei-ten in 2017, the Governor’s Prize at the 54th WACA Exhibition in 2020, and multiple major prizes in 2021 at the Nihon Shin Kōgei-ten, the Kasama Ceramic Art Grand Prize Exhibition, and continued recognition in 2022 at the Tōbi Ceramic Art Society of Japan Exhibition.

In addition to her extensive exhibition history within Japan, Yamaguchi has participated in ceramic events in Europe and Korea. Her work is held in the collection of the Tōshin Ceramic Museum, reflecting her standing as a mature and highly respected figure in contemporary Japanese ceramics.
