Takahashi Aoi タカハシ アオイ

Takahashi Aoi (b. 1999) was born in Miyagi Prefecture and graduated from the Craft Department of the University of Tsukuba in 2022. She subsequently enrolled at the Tajimi Pottery Design Technical Institute, completing advanced studies there in 2025. Her work has been featured in New Wind – Design and Expression at Nagoya Takashimaya in 2023 and Nihonbashi Tokyo Takashimaya in 2024, and she was selected as a finalist for the Taiwan Ceramics Biennale at the Yingge Ceramics Museum in 2024.

Takahashi’s practice centers on labor-intensive, repetitive processes that mirror the rhythms and emotional weight of daily life. In her growing series, forms are densely covered with hand-formed tassels whose twisted, flowing bodies recall fur, sea life, or organic growth. Each tassel is created through the repeated action of twisting and attaching clay over the course of several months. The physical exhaustion, confusion, and quiet persistence embedded in this process are central to the work itself.

For Takahashi, this repetition reflects human existence: life unfolds through continuous interaction with others, yet the transmission of one’s inner self is always unstable and partially uncontrollable. Words, in particular, become clouded by vanity and desire. By acknowledging her own immaturity and returning again and again to simple bodily actions, she seeks to grasp a tangible sense of being alive in the present moment. The accumulated time and effort remain visibly embedded in the surface, becoming evidence of lived experience.

Although the works are created primarily for herself, Takahashi hopes they function as points of departure for viewers’ reflection. Through confronting pain, fatigue, and uncertainty without avoidance, her work affirms existence not as mere survival, but as an active, present engagement with life as it unfolds.
