Shingu Sayaka 新宮 さやか

Shingu Sayaka (b. 1979) was born in Osaka and graduated from Osaka University of the Arts in 2001 before being selected for an artist residency at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Shiga in 2003. Deeply influenced by nature and traditional Japanese aesthetics, she is best known for her intricately hand-built ceramic sculptures that evoke the fragility and ephemeral beauty of flowers, often using mixed clay, slip, and glaze with meticulous craftsmanship. Her work reflects a contemplative engagement with themes of impermanence and the poetic qualities of botanical form, drawing on a heritage of mono no aware—the awareness of transience—as a central conceptual thread.

Shingu’s pieces range from delicate floral sculptures to functional vessels, many of which convey a striking realism that belies the permanence of ceramic material. Her Calyx series, for example, features layered petal-like forms with intricately carved and slip-defined surfaces that evoke both natural growth and emotional resonance.

Her work has been selected for major exhibitions including the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition and the Kyoto Arts and Crafts Biennale, and she has held numerous solo shows at galleries across Japan. She has also participated in international exhibitions, further establishing her reputation beyond Japan.

Shingu’s work is held in public and private collections and is increasingly recognized for its unique combination of technical precision, poetic depth, and sculptural sensitivity—qualities that place her at the forefront of her generation in contemporary Japanese ceramics.
