Shigemori Yoko 重森 陽子

Shigemori Yoko (1953–2021) was born in Kagoshima and later moved to Kyoto to study painting at Kyoto Tankidai Art College before turning to ceramics at Kyoto Municipal Art University. She trained in traditional pottery techniques under Kondo Yutaka and continued in advanced courses with avant-garde master Yagi Kazuo, graduating in 1979.

Her first solo exhibitions were held while still a student at Gallery Iteza in Kyoto. Choosing the intimacy of private galleries over competitive exhibitions, Shigemori built an expansive and influential career. She received the Yagi Kazuo Prize in 1986 and 1988 at the Nihon Gendai Togeiten (National Modern Ceramics Exhibition) and was one of five artists featured in Toh, volume 76, the first issue dedicated entirely to Kyoto potters. Her work is held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
