Okushima Keiji 奥島 圭二

Okushima Keiji was born in Kyoto in 1977 and grew up in Shiga Prefecture near Lake Biwa. He graduated from Ritsumeikan University in 2000, then went on to study glass at the Toyama Institute of Glass Art, completing his training in 2002. After working in both a glass studio and a traditional kimono dyeing workshop, experiences that deepened his sensitivity to material and color, he established his own independent practice in 2010 and set up his studio in Takashima, Shiga.

Working primarily with kiln casting and glassblowing, Okushima explores the inherent contradictions of glass—liquid and solid, fragile and strong, transparent yet reflective. His works range from functional objects to sculptural forms, often incorporating other materials and his own experimental techniques. Drawing inspiration from nature, memory, and inner landscapes, his practice seeks to express fleeting, intangible qualities such as time, presence, and transformation. He has exhibited widely in Japan and internationally, and continues to investigate the poetic possibilities of glass in works that aim to exist beyond a fixed sense of time.
