Murakoshi Takuma was born in Aichi Prefecture in 1954 and is an artist whose life is devoted almost entirely to working with clay. Rather than pursuing ceramics as a conventional livelihood, he has followed an instinctive, almost primal approach to making, a commitment that has earned him a dedicated following and sustained demand for his work.
He began his ceramic path in 1980 under the tutelage of Kyoto potter Umehara Takehira. Drawn to the raw materiality of clay and firing, Murakoshi favors rough Shigaraki-style glazes, allowing surface, weight, and kiln effects to speak with minimal intervention. In 1997 he established his own kiln in Kyoto’s historic Kiyomizu pottery district, later relocating to Nagaoka in 2002 to further pursue his independent practice.
Although he deliberately avoids the competitive exhibition circuit, Murakoshi’s work has been embraced by many of Japan’s most respected galleries. His pieces have been presented in private exhibitions at leading venues, including the prestigious Kuroda Toen in Tokyo’s Ginza district, affirming his position as a quietly influential and deeply committed ceramic artist.
