Masatomo Toi 東井 真咲朝
Masatomo Toi was born in Aichi Prefecture in 1992 and graduated from the Design Course at the Tajimi Ceramics Research Facility in 2019. Since then, he has been developing his distinctive series of “Thorny” vessels and sculptural objects, works characterized by tension, texture, and an assertive physical presence.
Alongside his studio practice, Toi has been studying the way of tea, and the bowls presented here mark his first unadorned engagement with the tea world. While more overtly expressive horned chawan also exist within his practice, these works reveal a quieter exploration of form and restraint, informed by his growing understanding of tea aesthetics.
His work has been featured in a number of group and juried exhibitions, and he is currently spending a year in Australia dedicated to study and experimentation. This period of immersion and expansion signals a promising trajectory, and much is expected from his future development.
