Furutani Taketoshi 古谷 剛敏

Furutani Taketoshi was born in 1974, the son of master craftsman Furutani Hirofumi. He graduated from the Ceramics Department of Shigaraki Industrial High School in 1992 before entering the Shiga Prefectural Ceramics Research Facility, where he studied the small rokuro wheel technique, completing the program the following year. In 1993, he apprenticed under Suzuki Iwau, and subsequently returned to the Research Facility for a second course, graduating in 1995.

He then returned to the family kiln, training in the time-honored lineage passed down from his grandfather, Furutani Chūroku I, and his father, Hirofumi (Chūroku II). In 2013, he was designated a Dento Kōgeishi (Traditional Craftsman). Since then, he has exhibited consistently at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition.

Furutani’s work is characterized by its quiet restraint and organic simplicity, producing vessels with a timeless presence. At the same time, he continues to challenge clay through innovative techniques and new forms, creating works that are firmly rooted in the present while remaining deeply connected to the traditions inherited through generations.
