Atarashi Manabu 新 学

Atarashi Manabu was born in Osaka in 1973 and graduated from the Literature Department of Kansai University in 1995. He began studying ceramics under his father, Atarashi Kanji — a second‑generation Iga pottery master and a leading postwar revivalist of the tradition — and built his first anagama (wood‑fired) kiln in 2002, the same year he held his first solo exhibition. He has since constructed multiple kilns and has exhibited extensively across Japan, including gallery exhibitions, regional art fairs, and juried competitions. In 2013 he was awarded a prize at the 6th Contemporary Tea Ceramics Exhibition and was certified as a Traditional Craftsman of Iga ware.

Manabu’s work is celebrated for its intensely fired surfaces, rich ash glazes, bidoro glass effects, and bold geometric forms, bringing a contemporary sensibility to the traditional Iga style. His pieces — ranging from tea bowls and vessels to sculptural tableware — reflect both the elemental energy of wood firing and an innovative approach that pushes the Iga tradition into the 21st century.
