Atarashi Kanji 新 歓嗣

Atarashi Kanji was born in Osaka in 1944 and graduated from the Osaka College of Craft Design. Following his studies, he spent three years working in Kobe and a further four years in Kishiwada, Wakayama, developing his technical foundation and artistic direction before settling in Iga.

In Iga, Atarashi became one of the key figures in the revival and preservation of the region’s historic ceramic tradition. Deeply committed to the material, firing methods, and spirit of Iga ware, his work reflects both a profound respect for inherited techniques and a personal, lived engagement with the clay and kiln.

While his works have been shown at major venues such as the National Craft Fair, Atarashi favors the quiet intensity of private exhibitions, which he holds several times each year. Outside of these exhibitions, he can often be found at his kiln, working closely alongside his son and daughter, continuing a family-based practice that embodies the continuity and vitality of the Iga ceramic lineage.
