2026 Autumn, Collection Exhibition "清水 卯一 -夢中-"

This autumn, our exhibition celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Shimizu Uichi, one of Japan’s most influential ceramic artists and a Living National Treasure.

Rather than focusing solely on his achievements, this exhibition offers a more personal portrait of Uichi through the perspective of his family. It is through this spirit of Muchū that we come to know not only the celebrated artist, but also the person behind the title.

夢中 (Muchū)
Literally: In the midst of a dream
The Japanese word muchū describes a state of total absorption.
For a Western audience, "dream" might suggest fantasy, but in Japanese, “muchū ni naru” often describes the condition of becoming so engrossed in an activity that awareness of time and surroundings, even self, falls away. Unlike obsession, muchū carries a sense of openness, curiosity, and joy. Often associated with the natural curiosity of a child, muchū suggests engagement driven by wonder rather than obligation.
The title was chosen to reflect the spirit of Shimizu Uichi. 

Though celebrated as a Living National Treasure for his mastery of iron glazes, Shimizu never ceased exploring. Throughout his life he continued to experiment with new materials, forms, and glazes, guided not by the pursuit of recognition, but by an enduring curiosity. The works gathered in this exhibition reveal an artist who remained, until the end of his life, muchū.
