Bunto enclosed in the original wooden box titled Rei-un (frozen cloud). Looking into the scene one can almost hear the wind whipping the bare willow branches. It is performed with pigment and ink on silk in a silk border with bone rollers. It is 40 x 193 cm (16 x 78 inches) and is in fine condition.
Hayashi Bunto (1882-1966) studied painting under Yamamoto Shunkyo, and became a preeminent Shijo school artist of the early 20th Century. Disillusioned with the Juried exhibitions, along with Kikuchi Keigetsu and Iguchi Kashu, he was instrumental in the founding of the Nihon Jiyu Gakkai. He is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, as well as many private collections.
