A wonderfully burled wood framed with roiling waves on all the chamfered edges in lacquer by Fujii Izokichi enclosed in the original wooden box titled Nichi-getsu-un-moku Suzuri Bako (Sun-moon-Cloud Burl Writing Box). Removing the lid one finds a deep box in black lacquer for storing paper and other essentials. A pull out drawer contains a red-lacqeured ink stone and silver water dropper. The box is 30 x 20 x 17 cm (12 x 8 x 7 inches) and in perfect condition.
Fuji Izokichi was a woodworking/Lacquer artist based in Kanazawa from the early to mid 20th century. Like many craftsmen of his time, little is known of his life.
