Hashimoto Tōzan II is the second-generation head of the Tōzan Kiln (Tōzangama), founded in 1929 in Kagoshima by Hashimoto Shōzō (art name Tōzan), who was born in Kagoshima in 1893, trained from 1906 in Arita under the ceramic artist Tsuruta Tōkichi at Kuboyama, established the kiln devoted primarily to White Satsuma, later formed the Satsuma Tōki Co., Ltd. in 1948, and received the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Fifth Class, in 1971 and the Minami-Nihon Cultural Prize in 1978; in 1985 his son Mutsuo succeeded him, assuming the name Hashimoto Tōzan II and continuing to the present day. From its inception the Tōzan Kiln has upheld the maxim that “first and foremost is the making of the clay body,” pursuing the essential warmth and refined surface that give White Satsuma its life, along with graceful form, subtle brocade-like linework, and nuanced overglaze coloration. Centering on tea ceremony wares while responding to the spirit of each era, the kiln works within the long tradition of Satsuma ware—originating in the late Momoyama period with Korean potters brought to the domain after the Imjin Wars—developing the ivory-toned White Satsuma with fine crackle glaze and elegant kinrande decoration that flourished under domain patronage and remains a living lineage today.
