Very clearly the work of this artist, here is a thin lipped wan-gata bowl in mottled earthtones from Sakata Deika enclosed in the original signed wooden box tilted Hagi Chawan. It is quite large at 15 cm (6 inches) diameter, 7.2 cm (3 inches) tall and is in perfect condition.
Sakata Deika XIII (1915–2010) was a master potter and heir to one of the most prestigious lineages of Hagi ware The Sakata family traces its lineage to Yi Chakkwang (Ri Shakuko), a Korean potter considered one of the founding figures of Hagi ware. As one of the "Four Great Kilns of Fukawa Hagi"—alongside the Sakakura Shinbei, Tahara Tobei, and Shinjo Sukemon kilns—the Sakata kiln played a central role in the preservation and evolution of this ceramic tradition. In 1950, he assumed the name of 13th-generation Deika. He became a leading figure in the postwar history of Hagi ceramics, especially renowned for his flowing forms and warm, milky glazes that express a graceful and generous aesthetic.
