Enigmatic text has been cut from clay and joined line on line in overlapping fashion to form a vessel by London based Korean-born female artist Mimi JOUNG. This is inspired by the 1439 oil on wood painting by the Early Netherlandish master Jan van Eyck (which was a portrait of his wife) now known as Portrait of Margaret. It is 20.5 cm diameter, 25.5 cm tall (8 inches diameter, 10 inches tall) and in excellent condition, directly from the artist.
Born in South Korea in 1972, Mimi JOUNG earned an MA in Ceramics and Glass from the Royal College of Art in 2005. Based in London, her delicate, contemplative works explore themes of identity, displacement and the human condition. Her recent work draws from literature, mirroring a writer’s practice of observation and discovery. Using methods like 'tracing and clay taping,' she transforms poems, chapters and recurring words into sculptures, vessels, paintings and wall pieces blending literary inspirations - like Richard Brautigan, T.S. Eliot and Sylvia Plath - with artistic traditions ranging from Dansaekhwa’s meditative minimalism to Renaissance landscape painting. These works reflect both her personal passions and the imagined utopias and dystopias of the authors who inspire her. Her deep familiarity with materials and techniques allows her to engage with the historical significance of ceramics - examining form, colour and meaning through a contemporary lens.
