The compact pear-shaped body rises through a short, constricted neck to a generously flared mouth, giving the vessel a strong silhouette despite its intimate scale. Across the dark iron-rich body, Shimizu has poured and trailed a thick white glaze in broad, spontaneous passages, leaving large areas of the lustrous brown-black ground exposed. Where the two glazes meet, iron bleeds into the white in fine rust-colored lines and branching fissures, while longer streaks descend across the body like freely drawn brushwork. The white glaze varies from opaque and creamy to thin and translucent, punctuated by pinholes and fine crackle, and in places gathers into rounded drops before stopping abruptly against the dark ground. Particularly striking is the contrast between the energetic exterior and the deep glossy brown of the flared mouth and interior. The underside is left unglazed, revealing the coarse grey clay and Shimizu's impressed seal. Although modest in function and scale, the tokkuri has an almost painterly character, its surface recording the movement of liquid glaze across the rounded form. It measures 9 cm (3-1/2 inches) in diameter, 13 cm (just over 5 inches) tall and is in perfect condition.

Shimizu Uichi (1926-2004) was born in Kyoto the son of a ceramic dealer. Discarding the family business, he apprenticed in plastic arts under future Living National Treasure Ishiguro Munemaro. His work retains some principal elements of his teachers style while incorporating an understated elegance and avant-garde spirit of challenge uncommon for his time. He was first exhibited at the Nitten in 1951, receiving numerous awards there since. He also took the gold medal at the Prague International Exhibition, and was at the Brussels World Exposition. He is in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum, Kyoto Museum of Modern art, Clark Center and the Freer Gallery among many others.

https://kuramonzen.com/products/lnt-tokkuri-sake-flask-%e3%83%bc%e6%b8%85%e6%b0%b4-%e5%8d%af%e4%b8%80-%e8%93%ac%e8%8e%b1%e5%be%b3%e5%88%a9
