lnt-seiji-celadon-vase-ー清水-卯一-青瓷花瓶
LNT Seiji Celadon Vase ー清水 卯一 “青瓷花瓶”

A tall celadon vase by Living National Treasure Shimizu Uichi, enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Seiji Kabin. Rising from a softly rounded, almost pear-shaped body, the vessel narrows through the shoulder into a remarkably long, gently tapering neck, giving the otherwise substantial form an elegant verticality. The surface is covered in a luminous blue-green celadon glaze, cloudy and translucent in appearance, shifting from pale aqua to deeper blue-green as it gathers over the irregularities of the body. Beneath the glaze, broad horizontal throwing marks ripple around the lower vessel, their movement softened by a fine network of crazing and the depth of the glaze. Rather than pursuing the cool perfection often associated with classical celadon, Shimizu allows the process of forming and firing to remain clearly visible, giving the vase an unusually fluid, almost aqueous quality. The base is especially revealing, where the glaze pools to a darker grey-green around the foot and three pale firing marks remain visible, with Shimizu's seal impressed at the center. The combination of the elongated silhouette, subtly irregular profile and shifting blue-green surface gives the vessel a quiet but commanding presence. It measures 13.5 cm (5-1/2 inches) in diameter, 33.5 cm (13-1/4 inches) tall and is in perfect condition.

Shimizu Uichi (1926-2004) was born in Kyoto the son of a ceramic dealer. Discarding the family business, he apprenticed in plastic arts under future Living National Treasure Ishiguro Munemaro. His work retains some principal elements of his teachers style while incorporating an understated elegance and avant-garde spirit of challenge uncommon for his time. He was first exhibited at the Nitten in 1951, receiving numerous awards there since. He also took the gold medal at the Prague International Exhibition, and was at the Brussels World Exposition. He is in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum, Kyoto Museum of Modern art, Clark Center and the Freer Gallery among many others.

https://kuramonzen.com/products/lnt-seiji-celadon-vase-%e3%83%bc%e6%b8%85%e6%b0%b4-%e5%8d%af%e4%b8%80-%e9%9d%92%e7%93%b7%e8%8a%b1%e7%93%b6
