A deep vessel of austere gray clay which has been bored through in a consistent pattern revealing various layers of color within the clay by Kato Shigemi enclosed in the original singed wooden box. It is 26 cm (10-1/2 inches) diameter, 20.5 cm (8 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Kato Shigemi (1935–2011) was born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, and graduated from Musashino Art Junior College. After various life experiences, he established a kiln in Sueda, Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1974, where he continued to create pottery throughout his career. He was selected and awarded in numerous juried exhibitions, including the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, the Western Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, and the Forms of Chanoyu Exhibition.
