This is a grand departure from all former horse imagery in Japan. A white horse, representing the vehicle for the gods, bearing a large Buddhist Jewel (Hoju) in polished brass on its back, the red lacquered saddle carrying the invisible god, magatama dangling from about the gilded tack. The carved wooden figure is covered in white gofun (powdered shell), with glass eyes and genuine metal, textile and lacquer fittings. It is enclosed in the original wooden box titled Goshinme and comes with the original black lacquered wooden stand as well. The Horse is 43 x 18 x 37.5 cm (17 x 7 x 15 inches) and is in excellent condition.
Goshinme (Sacred Horse) refers to a holy horse dedicated to a Shinto shrine. It is believed to serve as the steed for the deity when descending to the human realm, and may appear during shrine festivals or rituals. White horses, in particular, are traditionally held in high regard.
