Against the dark iron-rich ground, rounded spots emerge through dense passages of ochre, bronze and gold, their concentration changing continuously across the surface and becoming particularly dramatic within the broad interior. Shimizu titled the work Yōhen Tenmoku-yū Chawan, emphasizing yōhen—transformation within the kiln—and the bowl beautifully demonstrates his fascination with allowing heat and glaze chemistry to produce effects beyond the certainty of the maker’s hand. The restrained, gently flaring form gives the volatile surface room to unfold, while the vivid reddish-orange clay exposed around the foot provides an unexpected flash of warmth beneath the dark glaze. Seen closely, what first appears to be a simple oil-spot Tenmoku becomes an extraordinarily complex landscape of spots, crystals and metallic earth tones: a particularly fine expression of Shimizu’s lifelong curiosity about what could be discovered within the kiln. It is large at 14.5 cm (just less than 6 inches) diameter, 7.3 cm (3 inches) tall and in perfect condition.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShimizu Uichi (1926-2004) was born in Kyoto the son of a ceramic dealer. Discarding the family business, he apprenticed in plastic arts under future Living National Treasure Ishiguro Munemaro. His work retains some principal elements of his teachers style while incorporating an understated elegance and avant-garde spirit of challenge uncommon for his time. He was first exhibited at the Nitten in 1951, receiving numerous awards there since. He also took the gold medal at the Prague International Exhibition, and was at the Brussels World Exposition.
