It is 6.5 cm (3-1\/2 inches) diameter, roughly the same height and in excellent condition, dating from the late Edo period.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTachibanaya, the lacquerware workshop established by the renowned Kyoto master Nagano Ōteki, reached its height of prosperity under the second generation. However, the third-generation proprietor died at a relatively young age, and the workshop name “Tachibanaya” was subsequently inherited by his disciple, Asano Tomoshichi. Tomoshichi is known for having worked on folding screens and chests presented by the Shimazu clan to the Imperial Court. Although his exact dates remain uncertain, some sources record his death in 1860, while records of the Kyoto Expositions of 1872 and 1878 list a business called “Asano Tomoshichi Tedōgu Shōsha Hakurankai-sha.” Other contemporary references mention the names Asano Sōshichi and Asano Magoshichi. Taken together, these records suggest that the first-generation Tachibanaya Tomoshichi, a pupil of Ōteki, likely died around the end of the Edo period, and that a son or close relative subsequently continued the Tachibanaya name.
