On the upper portions of the outside the same pattern is performed over finely powdered gold. The inside of the rim, under-sides and lower half are entirely covered in Nashiji powdered gold flake revealed through the Togidashi technique. It is 24 x 24 x 21.3 cm (9-1/2 x 9-1/2 x 8-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition, dating from the 19th century.

According to the Kyoto National Museum: Lacquered low tables (zen or shokudai) and small footed trays (hanto or bon) have a long history in Japan of being used to serve and elevate formal meals and alcoholic drinks like sake during banquets or seasonal viewings.
