Iwata Hisatoshi (1925–1994) was a leading figure in modern Japanese glass art and the eldest son of pioneering glass artist Iwata Toshichi. Born in Tokyo, he studied Western painting, drawing, and design under several prominent artists before graduating from the Design Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts). He later continued technical training in glass at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. He made his debut at the Nitten exhibition in 1949 and went on to receive consecutive Special Selection awards in 1955 and 1956. In 1976, he received the Minister of Education Award, followed by major honors including the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon (1979), the Mainichi Art Award (1981), and the Japan Art Academy Award (1982). In 1972, he founded the Japan Glass Art Association and served as its first president, helping establish glass art as a recognized field in Japan. Iwata held numerous solo exhibitions at major venues such as Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi, and his works entered museum collections both in Japan and abroad. Known for his harmonious use of richly colored glass combined with gold and silver decoration, he also incorporated new materials such as ceramics to create a distinctive aesthetic world. His oeuvre ranges from vases and sculptural works to small drinking vessels, all demonstrating exceptional craftsmanship and artistic refinement.
