Its understated beauty, simple forms, and connection to nature make it a perfect fit for the tea ceremony, where every element, from the utensils to the environment, is carefully considered to promote harmony and mindfulness. It originated in Takatori (modern-day Yoshii, Fukuoka Prefecture) during the 16th century, and its development was significantly influenced by the aesthetic principles of the tea ceremony. Takatori pottery began in the Momoyama period (late 16th century) when Ono Takanori, a samurai and potter from the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, introduced a kiln in the Takatori area. He was encouraged by the Takamatsu Domain and established a pottery tradition based on the qualities valued by tea masters. The Takatori pottery tradition nearly disappeared during the Meiji period (1868–1912) due to changes in economic conditions and the introduction of mass-produced ceramics. The enduring legacy of Takatori pottery continues to be a testament to the enduring dual importance of aesthetics and functionality in Japanese culture.
