One can only guess at the original purpose of this gourd cut in half and lacquer black with ethnic designs about the base under a worked brass and copper alloy fitting fixed with a loop brass handle and collapsing ring.All the metalwork is non-spark, supporting the theory of this being a case for gunpowder.The mouth, quite wide, is of dark wood.Overall it is 9.5 cm (just under 4 inches) diameter at the base, 11.5 cm (4-1/2 inches) tall, and is in fine condition.The lacquer on the base is heavily crackled and it comes in a red lacquered wooden storage box ith a later label reading Kohyotan Sake Hyakunijuichi-go (Old Gourd Sake Number 121）
