A traditional Hanamori Bamboo Tea Room basket woven of rustic caramel colored bamboo by Ikeda Hyoa enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 26 x 22 x 38.5 cm (10-1/2 x 9 x 15-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition, retaining the original Otoshi bamboo insert.
Ikeda Hyoa (1914-2003) was born in Osaka Prefecture, the son of the bamboo artist Ikeda Hyōa I and received his earliest training under his father. He succeeded to the Hyōa name in 1933 and further refined his practice under the celebrated tea master and connoisseur Masuda Don'ō. Deeply influenced by the aesthetics of the tea ceremony, he specialized in bamboo tea utensils that combined refined craftsmanship with practical functionality. In 1953 he founded the bamboo craft society Chikurakukai (Bamboo Pleasure Society), through which he taught and promoted the art of bamboo craftsmanship. Beginning in 1975, he expanded his practice to include ceramics, producing tea bowls and other wares alongside his bamboo works. In his later years he adopted the art name Hyōō.
