17th-c-shoki-imari-porcelain-platter
17th c. Shoki Imari Porcelain Platter A

Difficult to capture in photographs is the richly textured surface of this rare 17th-century Imari porcelain platter. At its center, rendered in a restrained underglaze blue, a solitary traveler strides purposefully along a winding road, staff in hand, his gaze fixed on a distant pavilion. The broad cavetto surrounding this scene is enlivened with an intricate relief design of rabbits leaping among turbulent waves. Because the relief is left unglazed in white porcelain against the white ground, the decoration emerges only as light plays across the surface, lending the platter a remarkable sense of depth and quiet sophistication. The fluted rim is finished with a rich iron-brown glaze, providing a striking contrast to the luminous porcelain. Measuring 35 cm (14 in.) in diameter and 5 cm (2 in.) in height, the platter is in excellent condition and dates to the 17th century. Similar works are visible in the collection of the Kyushu Ceramic Museum (Shibata Collection) dating these from 1645-1670.
