Titled Kaki Miyabi (“Elegant Vase”), the rounded form appears partially broken open along one side, revealing a deep interior cavity framed by irregular, torn edges. The exterior is cloaked in a pale celadon glaze whose softly crackled surface recalls ancient glazes, yet the illusion of age is interrupted by scattered veins and fragments of gold luster that glint across the surface like exposed ore within stone. The lower portion contrasts dramatically with a dark, heavily textured base where dense, blistered accumulations of glaze resemble cooled volcanic matter or crystallized slag. This interplay between refined glaze, metallic brilliance, and raw material texture creates a tension between elegance and geological violence—a hallmark of Ichikawa’s practice, where chance, gravity, and extreme heat actively shape the final surface. The vessel reads simultaneously as container, landscape, and fragment of mineral growth, its irregular opening inviting contemplation of the space within.
