Kato Keizan I (1886-1963) was born in Tajimi city, Gifu, a pottery center in its own right, however, came to Kyoto to apprentice under Kiyomizu Rokubei IV. He established himself in the same neighborhood in Kyoto, where he became well known for celadon and Chinese based porcelain forms. The kiln was succeeded by his first son, Keizan II (1913-1995), who passed it on to his own son. Keizan III was born in Kyoto in 1948, third generation heir to the family tradition. He was first accepted into the Nitten National Art Exhibition while still a student at the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, graduating in 1973. He has been selected for show at the Chunichi Kokusai International Ceramics Exhibition, Faenza International Ceramics Biennale. His work is consistently featured in the prestigious Takashimaya Department Store Art Salon.
