A pair of large silk paintings dating from the Taisho to early Showa periods of forest scenes by Shirayama Shunpo expressing succinctly the aesthetic dominating Japanese painitng from the later Taisho to early Showaeras (1920s). On the left, Kiji (Japaese Pheasent) rest in boughs deep in the forest, while on the right a parent watches over the nest filled with a brood of hungry beaks. Pigment on silk mounted in beautiful blue cloth with large solid ivory rollers (these will be changed if exporting). Each scroll is 87.5 x 201 cm (34-1/2 x 79 inches). There is minor toning typical of age, and one has original (pre-mounting) repairs to the silk which were likely once invisible, but have become apparent with time.  It comes enclosed in a custom made kiri-wood box.

Shirayama Shunpo (1886-1961) was born the son of lacquer artist and Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko (Modern University of Art) professor Shirayama Shosai. He studied under Hashimoto Gaho and Suzuki Kason, exhibiting his work at the Kokuga Seisaku Kyokai as well as the Bunten.
