An elegant vase in earth tones sculpted with flowers by Teraike Shizuto enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Hana-Kabin. Around the base broad leafs grow in the shadows in black and silver. The vase is 18 cm (7 inches) diameter, 37 cm (15 inches) tall and in excellent condition.

Teraike Shizuto (1933-present) was born the son of famous Kyoto potter Teraike Toshu, and studied under both his father and Tsukube Yaiichi at the Seito-Kai. He established his own kiln in 1966. While his father specialized in overglaze-painted porcelain, Shizuto did not follow that path. Instead, he developed a contemporary aesthetic that evokes the beauty of flowers through the use of glazes and wheel-formed shapes. He has been displayed and awarded at the Nitten National Exhibition and served as both judge and juror there, as well as with the National New Crafts Exhibition (Nihon Shin Kogei Ten). In 1974, he received the Grand Honorary Prize at the Vallauris International Biennale of Ceramics in France. Works by the artist are held in the collection of the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto among others.
