A transcending image of the aged Jurojin dated Bunka 5 (1808) signed Fujiwara Naganobu (attributed to Kano Naganobu, 1775-1828).  The powerful dark lines forming his robes are offset by the wispy atmosphere of his hair and flesh, creating an ethereal aura.  It has been completely remounted in a manner reflecting the original cloth, and retains the original large wooden rollers.  It is 68.5 x 196 cm (27 by 77 inches).

Isen was born to Kano Yosen-in, and studied painting under his father, succeeding as 7th head of the Kobikicho branch of the Kano school.  He was granted the rank of Hogan in 1802, and that of Hoin in 1816. To quote from Roberts: A painter of considerable talent, following the style of his ancestor Kano Tsunenobu, often working in a free, sketchy manner.  He was also capable of very fine colored works rivalling the best of his time, as evidenced by the extreme sensitivity brought forth here in the figures expression.  Held in many collections including the Tokyo National, Freer Gallery and Boston Museum.
