Born Yoshita Minoru, he began studying ceramics while still in high school and succeeded to the family kiln as its third-generation head in 1951. Building upon generations of experience with gold decoration, Yoshita devoted himself to the demanding technique of yūri-kinsai, in which exceptionally thin pieces of gold leaf are applied to the surface of a vessel before being covered with a transparent glaze and fired, suspending the decoration beneath the softly luminous surface. Through the use of gold leaf of differing thicknesses and richly colored grounds, he developed the technique into a remarkably subtle pictorial language, often depicting flowers and grasses in elegant, almost weightless compositions. Yoshita first exhibited at the Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition in 1974 and went on to receive numerous honors, including the Prince Takamatsu Memorial Prize in 1992 and the Japan Ceramic Society Award in 1995. In 2001 he was designated a Living National Treasure as holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property Yūri-kinsai and was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon; in 2006 he received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.
