Niisato Akio 新里 明士

Niisato Akio was born in Chiba Prefecture in 1977. After initially studying philosophy at Waseda University, he shifted his focus to ceramics and graduated from the Tajimi City Pottery Design and Technical Center in 2001. This intellectual background continues to inform his practice, which is known for its conceptual rigor and experimental approach to form and surface.

He gained major recognition with the Grand Prize at the 3rd Paramita Museum Ceramic Competition in 2008, followed by a growing number of solo and group exhibitions in Japan and internationally, including exhibitions in the United States and Italy. From 2011 to 2012, he served as Artist in Residence in the Harvard Ceramics Program, where he also completed a master’s degree.

In 2020, he was awarded the Japan Ceramic Society Award, one of the highest honors in the field. His work is held in significant public collections in Japan and Europe, reflecting his position as one of the leading figures in contemporary Japanese ceramics.
