Hayashi Shotaro 林 正太郎
Hayashi Shotaro (b. 1947) is one of the most influential figures in contemporary Mino ceramics. After graduating from high school, he initially entered regular employment, but in 1967 returned to Toki City to assist his brother, Hayashi Kotaro. It was during this period that his drive to create ceramics emerged in earnest.
In 1968, Hayashi received the highest award at the Gifu Prefectural Art Exhibition, marking the beginning of a distinguished career. He established his own kiln in 1974, and since then has built an exceptional record of exhibitions and accolades. His honors include participation in the Nihon Dentō Kōgei Ten (National Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition), the Governor’s Prize, and five Best of Show awards at the Asahi Tōgei Ten (Asahi Ceramics Exhibition), as well as Best of Show at the Gifu Prefectural Art Exhibition.
At the Mino Ceramics Exhibition, Hayashi has received the highest distinction, the Mino Ceramics Award, in addition to all three of the exhibition’s major prizes, including the Shōroku Award and the Kobei Award, underscoring his enduring impact on the field.
