Fukami Sueharu 深見 陶治
Fukami Sueharu is internationally regarded as one of the foremost masters of seihakuji (bluish-white celadon). His work has been exhibited extensively at Japan’s most prestigious exhibitions, including the Nitten, Nihon Tōgei Ten (National Japanese Ceramic Exhibition), and Nihon Gendai Kōgei Ten (National Japanese Modern Crafts Exhibition).
Fukami’s work is held in an exceptional number of major public collections worldwide. These include the National Museums of Modern Art in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka; the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Brooklyn Museum, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; museums in Philadelphia, St. Louis, Portland, Chicago, Minneapolis, and the Smithsonian Institution; as well as the British Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musée national de céramique in Sèvres, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Hetjens Museum in Düsseldorf, the National Gallery of Australia, and Yale University Museum, among many others.
Renowned for his uncompromising pursuit of purity in form and glaze, Fukami’s work represents the pinnacle of contemporary celadon, balancing extreme technical precision with a profound sense of stillness and restraint. His influence and legacy within modern ceramic art are widely acknowledged both in Japan and internationally.
